Glad’s House began in 2006 after Vicky, our Development Director, spent part of her gap year in Mombasa volunteering with street children. After a moving and challenging 5 months working with some of the most inspirational social workers and youth workers (now all part of the Glad’s House Family!) she vowed to work with them to establish a centre for Street Children. When her mum and dad came to visit at the end of her travels, their eyes were also opened to ‘another world’. Cliff and Jan are now Glad’s House Chairman and Secretary. In June 2006 we became a registered charity in the UK.
Glad’s House started small, initially shipping out sporting equipment to our local partner, Mombasa Olympic Youth Organisation (MOYO). MOYO is now integrated into Glad’s House, as our sport section. We have slowly grown over the five years and have been lucky enough to have some very special moments along the way. These include being Soccer AM’s nominated charity for two seasons, the Chelsea Legends playing 5 a side football in Spitalfields Market for Glads House and our Caddie Programme being supported by The European Tour. But the real highlight? Seeing Glad’s House grow into a pioneering and high quality project for the street children in Mombasa and, of course, street children leaving the street and successfully standing on their own two feet.
